# Notion

> Connect Notion with Qontext

## Overview

The Notion connection allows Qontext to read pages and database pages from a connected Notion workspace and ingest their text content into your context repository.

<Info>
  Only pages and content that the connected Notion user can access will be ingested into your context repository.
</Info>

**Supported data types:**

| Object           | Description                                                     |
| ---------------- | --------------------------------------------------------------- |
| `Pages` | Public and shared pages with text, headings, and inline content |
| `Database Pages` | Notion databases (rows, properties, and their page content) |

**Unsupported:**

| Object        | Description                                                             |

## Recommended setup

Use a **dedicated integration user** in your Notion workspace to ensure a stable and uninterrupted connection.

<div className="qontext-tip-check-wrapper">
  <Tip> Create a service account such as `qontext@yourcompany.com` and grant it access to the pages or teamspaces you want Qontext to ingest. This prevents sync disruptions when employee accounts or permissions change.</Tip>
</div>

The integration user will:

* Authenticate the connection between Qontext and Notion.
* Access shared pages and teamspaces with the minimum required permissions.

## Setting up the connection

You can connect Notion from your Qontext workspace, authorize access in Notion, then choose what to sync and how often. The steps below walk you through the full flow.

<Info>
  You can also manage all your credentials, including Notion, from the **Sources** page.
</Info>

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open Sources in your workspace">
    In the [Qontext app](https://app.qontext.ai), open your workspace and go to the **Sources** tab, then click **+ Connect data source**.

    <img src="https://mintlify.s3.us-west-1.amazonaws.com/qontext/connections/connections/images/sources_page.png" alt="Sources tab in a Qontext workspace" className="rounded-lg mt-4" style={{ maxWidth: '100%' }} />
  </Step>

  <Step title="Select Notion as the data source">
    Choose **Notion** from the list of available data sources. This starts the Notion connection flow.

    <img src="https://mintlify.s3.us-west-1.amazonaws.com/qontext/connections/connections/images/qontext_select_integration.png" alt="Select Notion from the list of integrations" className="rounded-lg mt-4" style={{ maxWidth: '100%' }} />
  </Step>

  <Step title="Connect Notion">
    You can **reuse existing Notion credentials** (if you’ve already connected this Notion account to Qontext) or **create a new connection**.

    <img src="https://mintlify.s3.us-west-1.amazonaws.com/qontext/connections/connections/images/notion/notion_credential.png" alt="Notion page selection" className="rounded-lg mt-4" style={{ maxWidth: '100%', height: 'auto' }} />
  </Step>

  <Step title="Grant access to pages and databases">
    In the Notion dialog, grant permission for Qontext to view the pages you select.

    <img src="https://mintlify.s3.us-west-1.amazonaws.com/qontext/connections/connections/images/notion/notion_connect_with_qontext_new.png" alt="Notion allow access" className="rounded-lg mt-4" style={{ maxWidth: '70%', height: 'auto' }} />

    Then, select the teamspace from which you want to provide information to Qontext. Confirm to complete the OAuth flow.

    <Info>
      It is recommended to select the whole teamspace and filter it in the next step via the Qontext UI. This makes it easier to manage and adapt your Notion connection.

  </Step>

  <Step title="Configure what to sync (filters)" id="configure-what-to-sync-filters">
    Select the pages and database pages you want Qontext to ingest into your context repository. Use the search bar to find them or navigate through subpages by clicking on **Page**.

    Click the **+** next to a page to add it and the **x** next to a selected page at the top to remove it from the selection.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Set sync frequency">
    Choose how often Qontext should refresh data from Notion (e.g. daily, weekly, monthly). More frequent syncs keep the context repository up to date but use more resources.

  </Step>

  <Step title="Set ingestion instructions (optional)">
    You can add [source instructions](/features/system_instructions) that tell Qontext how to interpret or prioritize the synced data. This step is optional.

  </Step>

  <Step title="Review and create connection">
    Review your choices (workspace, pages, frequency), then confirm to create the connection. Qontext will start the initial sync shortly after.

## Managing permissions

* Use a **single integration user** to manage Notion access for Qontext to avoid permission conflicts.
* Prefer a **share-by-default** approach for large sections and exclude pages you do not want indexed.
* Avoid multiple users creating separate Qontext connections for the same Notion pages. This can cause duplication or access conflicts.

### Share additional pages with Qontext

To share a specific page or database page from Notion:

1. Open the page in Notion.
2. Open the menu by clicking the three dots and add the Qontext connection.
3. Ensure parent pages are shared where relevant to maintain hierarchy.
   <img src="https://mintlify.s3.us-west-1.amazonaws.com/qontext/connections/connections/images/notion/notion_connect_in_notion.png" alt="Notion page share dialog for Qontext" className="rounded-lg mt-4" style={{ maxWidth: '100%', height: 'auto' }} />

## Sync latency

The initial sync time depends on workspace size and structure. Large or deeply nested workspaces can take **up to 12 hours** to fully index.

## FAQ

<AccordionGroup>
  <Accordion title="Who can set up the Notion connection?">
    Every **Notion Member** can set up the Notion connection. Make sure that the account has the required access to the pages you want to ingest.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Can I connect multiple Notion accounts to one Qontext workspace?">
    Yes, you can connect multiple Notion accounts to one Qontext workspace. Ideally, connect each Notion workspace only once to avoid duplication or access conflicts.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="How do I manually refresh Notion data?">
    Manual refresh for Notion connections is available via the **Sources** tab. Navigate to the respective Notion connection and open the **Syncs** tab. In the Sync settings, you can select **Resync all data**.

    <img src="https://mintlify.s3.us-west-1.amazonaws.com/qontext/connections/connections/images/notion/notion_resync.png" alt="Resync" className="rounded-lg mt-4" style={{ maxWidth: '100%' }} />
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="What happens if I disconnect Notion?">
    Disconnecting stops further syncs. Content already ingested from Notion remains in your context repository. For data removal, contact [support@qontext.ai](mailto:support@qontext.ai).
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="How can I limit what Qontext accesses?">
    By default, Qontext only ingests pages the connected Notion account has full access to. Additionally, you can add [filters](#configure-what-to-sync-filters) to every connection as described in the setup flow.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="How long does the first Notion sync take?">
    Initial sync time varies: small workspaces may finish in under an hour; very large or complex workspaces can take up to 12 hours. Subsequent syncs are incremental and faster.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="What should I do if my Notion sync fails?">
    Reconnect the integration and verify that the relevant pages are shared with the Qontext integration. If the issue persists, contact [support@qontext.ai](mailto:support@qontext.ai).
